From Aspiration to Impact: The Inspiring Journey of Dr. Shafi Bhuiyan, Physician, Academic, and Community Champion

TORONTO, ON। MAY 13, 2026– In the narrative of the Canadian dream, few stories resonate as powerfully as that of Dr. Shafi Bhuiyan. A physician, academic, and community champion, the Bangladeshi-Canadian leader is redefining what it means to integrate immigrant talent into the heart of Canada’s healthcare system.

Year 2018, he recognized as one of the RBC Top 75 Canadian Immigrants. Professor Bhuiyan’s journey—from a medical student in Bangladesh to a global authority in public health—serves as a blueprint for leadership, resilience, and service.

Dr. Bhuiyan’s academic background reflects his relentless pursuit of excellence. Originally trained as a physician in Bangladesh, he expanded his expertise internationally, earning a PhD from Osaka University, an MPH from Mahidol University, and an MBA from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), along with postgraduate training at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

This multicultural education shaped a clear mission: to ensure that the knowledge and skills of internationally educated health professionals (IEHPs) are not wasted.

He is a strong advocate for the integration of immigrant professionals into the Canadian healthcare workforce. At the University of Toronto and TMU, he has played a key role in establishing three innovative postgraduate programs designed to help IEHPs navigate the Canadian healthcare system.

“Education is the solution. Together we are stronger, and together we continue moving forward,” says Dr. Bhuiyan.

His impact is measurable. Over the past decade, he has mentored more than 50 professionals annually, helping physicians and allied health workers rebuild their careers in academia, government, and clinical practice.

Beyond academia, Dr. Bhuiyan’s influence extends across humanitarian and civil sectors like Maternal and Child Health: As a co-leader of the International Committee on the MCH Handbook, he works to adapt culturally appropriate health tools for immigrant and minority families in Canada. Community Health: A member of Lions Clubs International since 1986, he co-founded the Toronto Global Doctors Lions Club, leading major campaigns on diabetes awareness and prevention. Pandemic Response: As a founding faculty member of the Pandemic Institute at the University of Toronto, he provided scientific leadership supporting COVID-19 contact tracing and professional training during the global crisis.

His contributions have been widely recognized. His honors include the Career Impact Award for Excellence in Teaching, the South Asian Diaspora Champion Award, the Lions Clubs International President’s Distinguished Leadership Award, and the Helen Keller Fellowship.

Dr. Bhuiyan’s story begins in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he grew up in a culture deeply rooted in community values and resilience. His early years were shaped by academic discipline and a strong commitment to social service.

Before his medical career took shape, he emerged as a leader in civil society. In the early 1990s, he served as Leo District Council President for Lions Clubs International District 315A. During this time, he introduced his lifelong motto, “Education for a Brighter Nation,” a philosophy that would later guide his work in the Canadian diaspora.

He completed his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) at Notre Dame College, Dhaka, and was admitted to Sir Salimullah Medical College under the University of Dhaka in 1986 for his MBBS degree. He completed his internship in 1993 and began his medical career in 1994.

He later worked with Asthma Society and Bangladesh Medical College, and through government service, served as a maternal and child health physician in Kaliakair Upazila of Gazipur District.

He subsequently played a leading role in the reconstruction of Azimpur Maternity Hospital in Dhaka. He also served as Bangladesh’s liaison officer in collaboration with Japan for the development of the modern Maternal and Child Health Training Institute (MCHTI), which was launched in 2000.

Additionally, he provided technical support as an UNFPA consultant for Urban Primary Health Care, supporting city corporations across six divisions of the country until 2001.

Dr. Bhuiyan’s transition from a young leader in Dhaka to a distinguished professor in Canada reflects the power of a global mindset. By combining his Bangladeshi roots with advanced international training, he has become a unique asset to the Canadian healthcare system—demonstrating that the journey from immigrant physician to national contributor is built on lifelong learning and service.

Today, he continues to mentor the next generation, ensuring that the aspiration he once held as a student in Dhaka is transformed into lasting impact for the health of communities in Canada.
