Hillsborough County, Florida: An undercover deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man after he allegedly attempted to pull over the deputy’s unmarked vehicle using unauthorized emergency lights on a local highway.
According to authorities, the incident unfolded when the suspect activated flashing lights designed to resemble those used by law enforcement officers, signaling the driver of the undercover vehicle to stop. Unbeknownst to the suspect, the vehicle belonged to an undercover sheriff’s deputy.
The deputy continued driving before coordinating with other responding officers, who subsequently stopped the suspect and took him into custody without incident.
Investigators say the use of fake emergency lights to impersonate law enforcement is a serious offense that can endanger public safety and erode trust in legitimate police officers. The suspect now faces charges related to impersonating a law enforcement officer and the unlawful use of emergency equipment.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reminded motorists that if they are uncertain whether an unmarked vehicle attempting a traffic stop is a legitimate law enforcement vehicle, they should slow down, activate their hazard lights, and call 911 to verify the officer’s identity and instructions.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or additional details regarding the incident or the specific highway where the attempted stop occurred.
