Government Considering Public University Upgrade for Mymensingh Engineering College
Education Minister A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon and Member of Parliament for Mymensingh-4 (Sadar), Md. Abu Wahab Akand

Education Minister A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon has indicated that the government is considering converting Mymensingh Engineering College into a public university, emphasizing the need for a higher education institution in Mymensingh as a divisional city.

Speaking to reporters after a discussion meeting with center secretaries of the Mymensingh Education Board, as well as officials from the madrasa and technical education boards in the region, he said that Bangladesh Agricultural University has long been the main higher education institution highlighted in the area, but the city now requires another public university to meet growing educational demands.

The meeting began around 10:45 a.m. at Advocate Tarek Smriti Auditorium in the city’s Town Hall.

During the event, some teachers were accused of behaving inappropriately toward members of the media at the start of the minister’s speech, prompting journalists to leave the program in protest. Later in the afternoon, the adviser addressed reporters at Shahid Shahabuddin Hall of Mymensingh City Corporation, where he said authorities had been instructed to identify those responsible for the incident. According to him, both the education board and the district police administration have been asked to investigate the matter.

The education adviser also said the government is exploring plans to complete SSC and HSC examinations within the same academic year. He noted that under the current system, the examination process often extends the academic calendar by an additional six months. Discussions with stakeholders and ministry officials are ongoing, although no final decision has been made.

He further mentioned that a proposal to introduce alternating online and in-person classes in educational institutions as part of energy-saving measures is still under review. If approved, such a system would likely apply only to metropolitan areas.

The meeting was chaired by Mymensingh Divisional Commissioner Farah Shammi. Among those present were Member of Parliament for Mymensingh-4 (Sadar), Md. Abu Wahab Akand Wahid; Member of Parliament for Mymensingh-2 (Phulpur–Tarakanda), Muhammadullah; City Corporation Administrator Md. Rukunuzzaman Rokon; Chairman of the Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board, Mia Md. Nurul Haque; Chairman of the Bangladesh Technical Education Board, Md. Ruhul Amin; Deputy Commissioner Md. Saifur Rahman; Superintendent of Police Mohammad Kamrul Hasan; Convener of Mymensingh Metropolitan BNP, Professor Shafiqur Islam; and Controller of Examinations of Mymensingh Education Board, Professor Syed Akhtaruzzaman, among others.
