In a significant milestone for international diplomacy, a groundbreaking resolution on "Sustainable Bioeconomy," led by Bangladesh, was unanimously adopted at the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP). This achievement reinforces Bangladesh’s growing leadership in shaping the regional development agenda.
The Bangladesh delegation at the session held in Bangkok, Thailand, was led by Faqir Mahbub Anam, Minister for Posts, Telecommunications & IT, and Science & Technology.
The resolution, titled “Supporting the Transition Towards a Sustainable Bioeconomy in Asia and the Pacific,” was proposed by Bangladesh and received the full support of member states. It emphasizes:
• Regional Cooperation: Strengthening knowledge exchange and capacity building across the Asia-Pacific.
• Investment: Attracting strategic investments to develop sustainable bioeconomy value chains.
• Economic Transformation: Leveraging the circular economy, efficient resource utilization, and the application of science and technology.
This initiative aligns perfectly with Bangladesh’s national priorities of achieving innovation-driven and inclusive growth.
Reflecting a strong regional consensus on sustainable development, several nations joined Bangladesh as co-sponsors. These include India, China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, Mongolia, Armenia, and Kazakhstan.
Addressing the assembly, Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam stated:
“Bioeconomy is not just a new concept; it is a practical pathway to addressing climate challenges, increasing resilience, and ensuring inclusive growth. This resolution will accelerate the application of science and technology in the economic transformation of our region.”
The session also saw the adoption of the Baku-Bangkok Declaration on “Strengthening social development for inclusive societies for all ages.” This declaration reaffirms the region's commitment to inclusive and sustainable social progress and public welfare.
Significance: By spearheading this resolution, Bangladesh has not only demonstrated its diplomatic prowess but has also established itself as a pioneer in defining the future of sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.
