HOUSTON, Texas — July 4, 2026: Co-host Canada saw its historic FIFA World Cup campaign come to an end on Saturday after suffering a convincing 3-0 defeat to Morocco in the Round of 16, sending the North African side into the quarterfinals for the second consecutive World Cup.

Despite an energetic start backed by thousands of home supporters, Canada failed to convert several early opportunities. Morocco weathered the pressure before taking control after halftime with a clinical display of finishing and tactical discipline.

Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi broke the deadlock early in the second half from a cleverly worked free-kick before adding a spectacular second goal later in the match. Substitute Soufiane Rahimi completed the scoring deep into stoppage time, sealing an emphatic 3-0 victory for the Atlas Lions.

The defeat ends Canada’s best-ever World Cup campaign. Playing on home soil, the Canadians reached the knockout stage for the first time and earned memorable victories during the tournament, raising expectations for the future despite their Round of 16 exit. Missing star defender Alphonso Davies because of injury proved to be a significant setback against one of Africa’s strongest teams.

For Morocco, the victory continues a remarkable rise on the world stage. After becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semifinal in 2022, the Atlas Lions have once again demonstrated they are genuine contenders, producing another composed knockout performance to reach the last eight.

Morocco will now face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Paraguay and France in the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal Picture So Far

As of the completion of the Canada–Morocco match on July 4, only one team has officially secured a place in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals:

  • Morocco

The remaining seven quarterfinal spots will be decided as the Round of 16 continues through July 7, with matches including Brazil vs. Norway, Mexico vs. England, Portugal vs. Spain, United States vs. Belgium, Argentina vs. Egypt, Switzerland vs. Colombia, and the winner of France vs. Paraguay.
