First Lady Melania Trump leaned into menswear-inspired tailoring for Thursday's state dinner honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Madame Peng Liyuan, selecting a white cotton Saint Laurent blouse dominated by a large bow paired with black brocade Dolce & Gabbana skinny pants and a custom belt by her stylist Hervé Pierre. The event marked the fourth state dinner hosted by the Trump administration, according to WWD.

Tech Leaders Fill the Guest List

The dinner drew prominent figures from the technology sector, reflecting artificial intelligence's prominence in the bilateral talks earlier in the day. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos attended with Lauren Sanchez, who wore an off-the-shoulder black Alexander McQueen dress from the 2000s with Christian Louboutin heels. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, Apple chief executive Tim Cook, and NVIDIA chief executive Jensen Huang and his wife Lori were also present. President Trump had described the occasion as "the hottest ticket in town" during remarks at the United Nations General Assembly, noting the attendance of "the entire tech world, the entire banking world and a lot more."

Madame Peng Liyuan's Distinct Approach to First Ladies State Dinner Style

China's unofficial first lady wore a solid deep red gown with a black clutch featuring a gold clasp. Unlike Western first ladies who routinely credit designers for high-profile appearances, Madame Peng does not publicly name the labels she wears. For fourteen years in her role, she has worn exclusively Chinese designers, including pieces by Ma Ke, and Chinese brands do not use her name for marketing, the South China Morning Post has reported. Her arrival at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday featured a pale pink scarf with a dove gray dress incorporating a Chinese collar and qipao-style side slits. For Thursday's official White House welcome, she chose a navy dress with white trim at the neckline. President Xi wore a Mandarin-style jacket for the evening event, while President Trump wore a tuxedo.

Family and Corporate Attire

Ivanka Trump wore a gown by Lebanese designer Georges Hobeika, whose clients include Beyoncé, Zendaya, Lady Gaga, and Jennifer Lopez. For the morning welcome ceremony, she selected a pale blue long dress and bolero jacket with elaborate white embroidery by Chinese designer Guo Pei, known internationally for the canary yellow couture gown Rihanna wore to the 2015 Met Gala. Citigroup chief executive Jane Fraser departed from corporate dress codes in a red sequined gown. The first lady herself had worn a Givenchy skirt suit with a Gap T-shirt at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday and an Alexander McQueen skirt suit for Thursday's arrival ceremony.

Menu and Media Access

The meat-free menu included yellow squash velouté, wild mushroom fricassée, sesame-encrusted sea bass with braised bok choy, and vanilla crémeux with sour cherry confit, walnut frangipane, and honey from the White House beehive. Two major outlets, CNN and MSNBC, reported that their reporters were denied entry to the formal event despite a federal judge's ruling on Wednesday ordering the Trump administration to lift its media ban on both organizations and Politico and restore their White House access.

Why the Evening Mattered

The state dinner showcased contrasting diplomatic wardrobe strategies: a Western first lady embracing European luxury houses and a Chinese counterpart adhering to a deliberate, domestically sourced wardrobe that avoids commercial endorsement. The heavy tech industry presence underscored AI's centrality to the U.S.-China relationship, while the media access dispute highlighted ongoing tensions between the administration and major news organizations. For the global Bangladeshi and South Asian diaspora, the event offered a rare glimpse of high-stakes diplomacy where cultural signaling through dress operates alongside trade and technology negotiations.
