Chiefs Re-Sign Justin Watson to Practice Squad After Bye Week

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed wide receiver Justin Watson to their practice squad, head coach Andy Reid confirmed during a Monday press conference. The move reunites the team with a player who spent three seasons in Kansas City and contributed to a pair of championship runs.

According to Yahoo Sports, Watson returns to the organization after a brief stint with the Houston Texans last season. He had been a free agent since his release at the end of August.

Watson's Chiefs History and Production

During his initial tenure from 2022 through 2024, Watson appeared in 50 regular-season games for Kansas City. He accumulated 64 receptions for 1,064 yards and seven touchdowns. His postseason resume includes nine catches for 120 yards across three playoff runs, culminating in two Super Bowl victories.

The 28-year-old wideout originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018. He joined the Chiefs in 2022 and quickly became a reliable rotational piece in an offense that has consistently ranked among the league's most productive.

Context: Thornton Injury and Receiver Depth

The signing comes as Kansas City navigates a sudden shortage at the position. Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a dislocated ankle during Week 4, removing a speed element the coaching staff had planned to integrate into the game plan.

Following Thornton's injury, speculation circulated about a potential reunion with former Chiefs star Tyreek Hill. However, the front office opted for a different familiar face — one who already knows the playbook, the quarterback, and the expectations of the system.

Why the Move Matters for Kansas City

Watson's return provides immediate depth without a learning curve. He understands the timing and nuance of Patrick Mahomes' improvisational style, a factor that often separates productive role players from those who struggle to earn snaps in Andy Reid's scheme.

The practice squad designation allows the Chiefs to evaluate Watson's current form over the coming weeks while keeping a roster spot flexible. If injuries persist or performance demands it, he can be elevated to the active roster on game days.

For a team with championship aspirations, maintaining continuity at the margins of the roster can be the difference between a deep playoff run and an early exit. Watson's playoff experience — however limited in volume — adds a layer of composure in high-leverage moments.

Background: Watson's Journey Since Leaving KC

After the Chiefs moved on from Watson following the 2024 season, he signed with Houston hoping for an expanded role. That opportunity did not materialize as expected, and he was among the final cuts as the Texans trimmed their roster to 53 players in late August.

His availability in mid-October made him a low-risk, high-familiarity option for a Kansas City team that values institutional knowledge. The bye week provided the coaching staff time to assess the receiver room and identify Watson as the preferred solution.

Watson's understanding of the offense and his rapport with Mahomes made this a logical move, especially given the timing after the bye week.

The Chiefs enter their next game with a receiver group that now includes Watson on the practice squad, offering insurance and a potential contributor who has already delivered on football's biggest stage.
