British tennis player Sonay Kartal defeated Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-0 at the Wuhan Open on Friday, advancing to the quarter-finals in only her third tournament back from a six-month back injury.

Kartal dropped only two games against the 15th-seeded Paolini, a two-time Grand Slam finalist who reached the finals at the French Open and Wimbledon. The 24-year-old won the final 11 games of the match, taking full advantage of errors from her opponent, according to Sky Sports.

"From my side it was a pretty flawless performance so I'm very happy with that one," Kartal said in her on-court interview, according to Sky Sports.

How Kartal's injury sidelined her

Kartal has been out of competition since April with a back stress fracture. The Wuhan Open is her third tournament since returning to the tour, marking a rapid ascent back toward the elite rankings after months away. Her comeback accelerated this week at the WTA 1000 tournament, the top level of the women's professional tour, according to Sky Sports.

The result equals Kartal's best performance at a WTA 1000 event. She also reached the quarter-finals in Beijing last year, according to Sky Sports. Her performances at Wuhan have put her on the verge of a swift return to the top 100 rankings, according to Sky Sports.

What's next for Kartal

Kartal will face fifth seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals. Svitolina advanced by defeating wild card Guo Hanyu 6-1 6-4, according to Sky Sports.

The matchup against a top-five seed represents a significant test for Kartal as she continues her comeback. A victory would further strengthen her case for a return to the top 100 and position her for a deep run at one of the tour's most prestigious tournaments.

Paolini's uncharacteristic performance

Paolini's loss was marked by unforced errors throughout the match. The French Open and Wimbledon runner-up, who has been one of the year's breakout players, struggled to find her rhythm against Kartal's aggressive play, according to Sky Sports.

Paolini's defeat came as other top seeds also fell at Wuhan. Sixth seed Karolina Muchova lost 7-5 6-3 to Diana Shnaider, according to Sky Sports. The losses opened the door for other contenders, including Iga Swiatek, who defeated American Ashlyn Krueger 6-1 6-4 to keep up her push to qualify for the WTA Finals, according to Sky Sports.

Swiatek, who has reached the WTA Finals each year since 2021, is 10th in the race with the top eight qualifying for the season-ending event at Indian Wells next month, according to Sky Sports. Winning the Wuhan title would allow her to put pressure on Muchova in that race.

Chwalinska also advances

Surprise French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska reached the quarter-finals with a 6-4 6-1 victory over American Iva Jovic, according to Sky Sports. "I think it was quite a solid match from my side," Chwalinska said in her post-match press conference. "Iva is an amazing player. I knew that I needed to play my best game to get a win today. I think we had many very challenging rallies and it was a very physical match, I think, even though the score maybe doesn't show it, but it was definitely a very hard match."
