US inflation rate September: Prices jump 3.7% as fuel costs surge ahead of midterms
A 34.2% surge in vehicle fuel prices, driven by the US-Israel conflict with Iran, pushed inflation above forecasts in the last data release before the midterm elections. Social Security benefits will rise 3.6% in 2027 as a result.
