MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A fatal officer-involved shooting involving members of the Tennessee National Guard has sparked public scrutiny after a 20-year-old man was killed during an early morning pursuit in downtown Memphis.
According to investigators, the incident occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, when Tennessee National Guard soldiers assigned to the Memphis Safe Task Force were assisting local law enforcement in response to reports of gunfire.
Authorities said officers pursued 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson, who was reportedly carrying a handgun. During the foot chase, investigators allege Johnson turned toward the pursuing personnel while still armed, prompting two National Guard soldiers to open fire. Johnson was struck and later pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency medical aid provided by National Guard medics.
No law enforcement officers or National Guard personnel were injured during the encounter.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has launched an independent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officials have not released the identities of the soldiers involved, and no decision has been announced regarding the public release of body-camera or surveillance footage.
Johnson’s family has challenged the official account of the incident and is calling for greater transparency. Relatives have urged authorities to release all available video evidence, arguing that the public deserves a full understanding of what occurred.
The shooting has renewed debate over the deployment of National Guard personnel alongside local law enforcement in Memphis. Civil rights organizations and several elected officials have called for a thorough, transparent investigation before any conclusions are reached.
As the investigation continues, authorities have emphasized that the facts surrounding the use of deadly force remain under review. No findings have yet been issued regarding whether the shooting was legally justified.
