Roots in Foreign Soil: Over a Decade of 'Akkhor' Spreading Bengali to the Next Generation
Students of Akkhor Scool

New Jersey, USA — Twelve years ago, Akkhor Bangla School began its journey with a singular mission: to sow the seeds of the mother tongue in the hearts of the new generation of Bangladeshi-American children. Having served tirelessly as a non-profit organization for more than a decade, the school has now become a strong pillar in preserving the Bengali language and Bangladeshi culture abroad.

Continuing its yearly tradition, official enrollment has begun for the “Summer Bengali Language Program” for the June–August 2026 session. Based in the United States, the institution has gradually evolved into a recognized international platform for expatriate Bangladeshi children living across the globe.

In 2014, a group of visionary Bangladeshi-Americans launched this initiative in New Berlin, Wisconsin, with just 37 students. Their goal was simple yet profound: to protect the linguistic and cultural heritage of children growing up amid the fast-paced life of overseas communities.

Today, that dream has flourished. What started in a physical classroom in the Midwest has transformed into an international online education platform, connecting students and teachers from different parts of the world. Since 2020, the school has operated through a fully virtual model using modern technology such as Zoom and Google Classroom.

The upcoming Summer 2026 session will feature 12 structured classes designed to build a strong linguistic foundation. The Akkhor curriculum focuses on several key areas:

Reading & Writing: Mastering Bengali script and literacy
Conversation: Building confidence in speaking Bengali
Grammar & Vocabulary: Developing formal language skills
Cultural Understanding: Learning about the history and heritage of Bangladesh

In addition to the summer session, students remain engaged throughout the year through monthly review classes held on the third Saturday of every month.

The greatest strength of Akkhor Bangla School lies in its selfless leadership. The institution is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, including university professors, researchers, physicians, engineers, IT professionals, and community-minded parents.

This commitment to quality has opened the door for academic collaborations with respected institutions such as the The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, helping the school maintain a high standard of instruction.

As a registered non-profit organization, Akkhor Bangla School remains committed to making Bengali education accessible. While the school previously operated entirely tuition-free, it now collects a minimal fee from families to help offset operating expenses and educational costs, while continuing to keep the program affordable for the community.

School authorities are encouraging interested parents to register early. Through this program, the next generation can not only rediscover their linguistic roots but also experience a meaningful connection to Bangladesh while growing up abroad.
