Districts to Lead Tourism Boom as Government Sets High GDP Target-The Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, Ms. Afroza Khanam, has announced a target to raise the tourism sector

Dhaka | May 4, 2026

The Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, Ms. Afroza Khanam, MP, has announced a target to raise the tourism sector's contribution to the national GDP from the current 3% to 6–7%. She shared this vision today, Monday, during the first session of the "District Commissioners (DC) Conference 2026" held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.

During the session, the Minister and State Minister outlined the strategic roadmap for the tourism sector to field-level administrators. The government is formulating a comprehensive master plan centered around 1,742 identified tourist spots across the country.

In line with the current government's election manifesto, the tourism sector is being prioritized as a primary driver of the economy.

Specific focus was requested from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs to develop the Baliati Palace and Teota Palace in Manikganj to attract more tourists. District Commissioners were urged to act as catalysts for economic change by identifying new spots and ensuring a clean, safe environment for travelers.

In her speech as a special guest, Tourism Minister Ms. Afroza Khanam stated:

"Tourism potential is scattered across every district of the country. By utilizing your (DCs) skills and merit, we can successfully elevate this sector on the global stage."

State Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat addressed the DCs, saying, "Each of you can be a pioneer of change in your respective districts. A clean and safe tourism environment alone can transform a district’s economy."

Presided over by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani, the session was attended by Minister for Cultural Affairs Nitai Roy Chowdhury, MP, as the Chief Guest. Other notable attendees included State Minister for Culture Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam, MP, and the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Cultural Affairs, Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, along with senior government officials.
