DHAKA, May 31 (2026): The US Embassy in Dhaka has announced a major piece of positive news for immigrant visa applicants in Bangladesh. From now on, applications for all immigrant visa categories will be processed and completed within just two working days.
This new rule and timeline were announced in a special statement published on Sunday (May 31) on the official website and social media channels of the US Embassy in Dhaka.
The embassy stated that this new rule will officially take effect tomorrow, Monday (June 1, 2026). As a result, the delays and sufferings of immigrant visa applicants who have been waiting for a long time will be significantly reduced. Embassy authorities hope this new initiative will make services faster, more modern, and more effective for visa candidates.
According to the embassy's guidelines, the process will primarily be completed in two steps for visa applicants:
1 Document Review: Applicants must submit all required original documents during their first appointment. If there are no deficiencies in the documentation, the embassy will complete the review and issue a second appointment letter for the interview within the same week.
2 Visa Interview: The applicant must appear before the consular officer again for the interview at the scheduled date and time, carrying their original passport.
The statement further mentioned that for detailed information and visa categories, applicants are requested to refer to the embassy's designated "Directory of Visa Categories." Additionally, no original documents (except the passport) will be returned during the interview; they will be retained by the embassy.
It is worth noting that earlier this year, this special two-day process was introduced for certain specific categories (such as the IR-5 visa for parents of US citizens). However, starting June 1, it will apply to all types of immigrant visas. This decision will significantly cut down the waiting time for those applying from Bangladesh to permanently reside in the
