DHAKA | April 27, 2026 — In a strategic move to bolster Bangladesh’s environmental resilience, the World Bank has expressed keen interest in funding new sectors, specifically focusing on green job creation, pollution control, and institutional capacity building.

The commitment came during a high-level meeting today between the Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Abdul Awal Mintu, and the World Bank’s Divisional Director, Jean Pesme, at the Bangladesh Secretariat. State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam was also in attendance.

Integrating AI into Environmental Governance

A significant highlight of the discussion was the potential integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor air and water pollution. This technological shift aims to modernize the Department of Environment's (DoE) monitoring capabilities, allowing for real-time data collection and more effective enforcement of environmental laws.

Key Areas of Discussion:

• Renewable Energy: Strategies to increase the share of clean energy in the national grid.

• Pollution Control: Enhancing mechanisms to tackle industrial and urban waste.

• Project Acceleration: Reviewing the progress of ongoing World Bank-funded environmental projects to ensure timely completion.

• Sustainable Development: Reaffirming that long-term economic growth is impossible without robust environmental protection.

Commitment to Sustainable Investment

Minister Abdul Awal Mintu emphasized that the government is prioritizing the rapid implementation of climate change mitigation projects. He assured the delegation that the Ministry would ensure the optimal use of World Bank credit and remain open to expert consultations.

"Sustainable development is a pipe dream without environmental protection. We are committed to utilizing international support to build a greener, more resilient Bangladesh," the Minister stated.

World Bank’s Support for "Green Jobs"

Jean Pesme praised the government's alignment with global environmental goals and noted that the World Bank is ready to invest in new areas that align with national priorities. He specifically highlighted the potential for Green Jobs—employment that contributes to preserving or restoring the environment—as a vital pillar for the country's future economy.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to strengthen mutual cooperation to meet the challenges posed by climate change and to enhance the technical capacity of Bangladesh’s environmental regulatory bodies.
