GENERAL SANTOS, Philippines, June 8, 2026 — A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines early Monday, killing at least 32 people, injuring more than 200 others, and causing widespread destruction across the island of Mindanao. The quake also triggered tsunami warnings across parts of Southeast Asia before authorities later lifted the alerts.
According to Philippine disaster management officials, the earthquake’s epicenter was located off the coast of Sarangani Province near General Santos City in southern Mindanao. Strong tremors were felt across several provinces, causing panic among residents who rushed from homes, schools, and office buildings seeking safety.
Authorities reported that many of the fatalities were caused by collapsing buildings, falling debris, and landslides triggered by the powerful shaking. Sarangani Province was among the hardest-hit areas, where a deadly landslide claimed multiple lives. Rescue teams continue to search through rubble for survivors as officials fear the death toll could rise further.
Several buildings collapsed in General Santos City, including commercial establishments and residential structures. Power outages and infrastructure damage were reported in numerous communities. At least one coastal village suffered tsunami-related damage after waves measuring around one meter (three feet) struck parts of the shoreline.
The earthquake prompted tsunami warnings for parts of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Japan, and other nearby coastal regions. Residents in vulnerable coastal areas were ordered to move to higher ground. After several hours of monitoring, authorities determined that the tsunami threat had diminished and subsequently lifted the warnings.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded more than 130 aftershocks following the main quake, with officials warning residents to remain alert for additional strong tremors. Emergency shelters have been opened for displaced families, while schools in affected areas were temporarily closed.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the government has mobilized rescue and relief operations across the affected region. Search-and-rescue teams, military personnel, and humanitarian organizations have been deployed to assist victims and assess the full extent of the damage. Several countries, including the United States, Japan, France, and New Zealand, have offered assistance to the Philippines.
The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active regions, making the country highly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity. This earthquake is among the strongest to strike the nation in recent years and has renewed concerns about disaster preparedness in vulnerable coastal and urban communities.
