FREEHOLD, N.J. — A Freehold High School freshman has earned national recognition for her research into one of the world’s growing environmental challenges: microplastic pollution.
Parini Pati, a freshman at Freehold High School, has been selected as one of the Top 300 Junior Innovators in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, a national STEM competition administered by the Society for Science.
Pati was selected from nearly 2,000 students from across the United States for research she developed and conducted while she was an eighth-grade student.
Her project, titled “Nature’s Solution to Microplastics: Eco-Friendly Removal of Micro- and Nanoplastics Using Plant and Fungi-Derived Biopolymers,” examines the potential use of naturally derived materials to address microplastic and nanoplastic contamination.
Microplastics—tiny plastic particles that can enter waterways, soil and ecosystems—have become an increasing environmental concern. Through her research, Pati explored whether plant- and fungi-derived biopolymers could provide an environmentally friendly approach to removing these pollutants.
Before earning national recognition, Pati presented her research at science competitions including the Jersey Shore Science Fair (JSSF) and the Delaware Valley Science Fair (DVSF), where her work gained attention for its focus on environmental sustainability and innovative scientific methods.
The Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge recognizes promising young scientists and engineers from across the country. Selection among the Top 300 places Pati in a national group of middle school researchers recognized for their scientific research, creativity and problem-solving.
Pati’s recognition comes as she begins her freshman year at Freehold High School, where she is continuing her academic journey with a growing interest in science, environmental research and green technology.
Her research demonstrates how young students are increasingly contributing ideas to some of the most challenging environmental issues facing society. Her work on microplastic pollution also highlights the potential for science and innovation to play a role in developing more sustainable solutions for the future.
