Bangladesh were bowled out for 142 in their second innings on Saturday, setting West Indies a target of 170 to win the first Test of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
The hosts resumed Day 4 on a precarious 79 for 6, still 106 runs ahead, before Nayeem Hasan's maiden Test half-century guided the lower order to add 64 runs. The all-rounder made 52 off 87 balls, reaching the milestone with a single off Jomel Warrican to mid-wicket after being dropped on 29 by Roston Chase.
The target is regarded as tougher to achieve for any side in the fourth innings because the pitch is offering turn and bounce aplenty, according to Prothom Alo English.
Roston Chase five wicket haul wraps up Bangladesh innings
West Indies captain Roston Chase claimed his fifth Test five-wicket haul, finishing with 5-36 in the second innings. He dismissed Nayeem, caught at long-on, to end the resistance. Jomel Warrican supported with 4-63, following his first-innings 5-53.
Chase had earlier triggered a dramatic collapse on Day 3, taking three wickets in two overs to reduce Bangladesh from 33 for 1 to 33 for 4. Shadman Islam (13), Najmul Hossain Shanto (10), and Towhid Hridoy (0) all fell to the off-spinner, according to the ICC.
Warrican then removed Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz to leave the hosts 53 for 6. Nayeem and Jaker Ali Anik provided some resistance toward the end of Day 3, remaining unbeaten on 18 apiece when bad light forced an early halt. However, Anik was dismissed for 22 in the first over of Day 4.
West Indies openers survive to lunch
Chasing 170, West Indies reached 8 for no loss at lunch. Openers John Campbell and Brandon King survived several close calls in the solitary over bowled before the interval, Prothom Alo English reported.
West Indies batting coach Floyd Reifer expressed confidence in his team after Day 3. He stated that he did not think Bangladesh would get to 150, but regardless of the score, the team would approach it in a positive manner, show intent, look for scoring opportunities, and put pressure on the hosts from early.
Reifer added that the team was in a very good position, noting that while it was unfortunate they did not get past the first-innings total, it was a great effort to have the hosts 79 for 6.
How did Nayeem Hasan perform in the first Test?
Nayeem Hasan provided critical contributions with both bat and ball. In the first innings, he led the Bangladesh bowling effort by picking up 4 wickets for 33 runs.
In the second innings, his 52 off 87 balls ensured Bangladesh pushed their lead past 150. His all-round performance of 4-33 and 52 runs has left him as a candidate for Player of the Match.
First-innings totals and series schedule
West Indies were bowled out for 245 in their first innings, finishing 27 runs short of the total set by Bangladesh. Tagenarine Chanderpaul top-scored with 56, while Justin Greaves made 46 and Chase remained unbeaten on 43, according to the ICC.
