Norway Stuns Brazil to Reach FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals-Haaland’s Late Brace Sends Five-Time Champions Crashing Out in Dramatic Round of 16 Upset

Norway national football team produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, defeating Brazil national football team 2-1 in the Round of 16 to book a place in the quarterfinals.

The victory was inspired by star striker Erling Haaland, who scored twice in the closing stages after a tense, scoreless first half. Norway’s disciplined defensive display and clinical finishing ended Brazil’s hopes of capturing a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

Brazil had the opportunity to seize control early in the match, but midfielder Bruno Guimarães failed to convert a first-half penalty as Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland made a crucial save to keep the score level. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances through Neymar and Vinícius Júnior, the South Americans struggled to break down Norway’s well-organized defense.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 79th minute when Haaland rose highest to power home a header, silencing the crowd in New Jersey. Just ten minutes later, the Manchester City forward struck again with a composed finish after Norway caught Brazil on the counterattack, putting the Scandinavian side firmly in command.

Brazil pulled one goal back deep into stoppage time through a Neymar penalty, but it proved too little, too late as Norway held on for a famous victory.

The result continues Norway’s remarkable record against Brazil in World Cup history and marks one of the nation’s greatest achievements on football’s biggest stage. The Norwegians now advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the Mexico–England Round of 16 clash.

For Brazil, the defeat represents another painful knockout-stage exit despite entering the tournament as one of the favorites under coach Carlo Ancelotti. Questions are likely to be asked about the team’s inability to capitalize on early opportunities and its defensive lapses late in the match.

Norway, meanwhile, continues its dream World Cup campaign, with Haaland strengthening his case as one of the tournament’s standout performers and leading his country one step closer to a historic semifinal appearance.
