The USA vs Spain showdown arrives nine months before the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, pitting the reigning world champions against the defending Olympic gold medalists in a pair of friendlies that carry the weight of a tournament semifinal. The second-ranked United States hosts top-ranked Spain on Saturday at Audi Field in Washington (2:30 p.m. ET, TBS) and again Tuesday at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania (7 p.m. ET, TNT) — two matches separated by just 76½ hours and 120 miles.

According to Yahoo Sports, the results will not carry official weight, especially with significant players missing from both rosters, but the meetings provide rare insight into programs that have not faced each other in four years and have collided only four times in history. "It's a huge opportunity, especially with it being friendlies," forward Trinity Rodman said Friday. "We've had the privilege to have great opponents this year going into a World Cup year."

World Cup Tuneups Amid Qualifying Path

These friendlies serve as the final serious tests before CONCACAF World Cup qualifying begins next month, where the U.S. needs only one victory — against No. 78 El Salvador — to secure passage to Brazil. Even a monumental upset would leave a backdoor route via the intercontinental playoff. Coach Emma Hayes framed the matches as World Cup preparation: "It's just making the collective better. It's making the collective understanding to think tactically, apply the right decisions."

The U.S. enters having won two of three home matches against No. 5 Japan in April and split two away encounters with No. 7 Brazil in June. Spain, already qualified for the World Cup, approaches the window with equal intensity. Captain Irene Paredes said, "They're two friendly games, but we're approaching them as if the World Cup starts here. Before, we looked at [the U.S.] from several steps below and wanted to be like them. Now we can go toe-to-toe with them."

Spain's Stunning Ascent to Number One

Spain's rise represents one of the most rapid ascents in women's soccer. Five years ago the Spaniards had not cracked the FIFA top 10. Since then they have won the 2023 World Cup, finished second at the 2025 European Championship, and produced two of the past three under-20 world titles plus two U-17 trophies. Since falling to the U.S. in the 2020 SheBelieves Cup, Spain's senior side has lost just 10 of 104 matches. In the past 27 games, the only regulation defeats came against European champion England. Spain has occupied the No. 1 FIFA ranking since August 2025.

"They've shown their individual quality, but also collective quality," said Lily Yohannes, the 19-year-old Lyonnes midfielder who is the youngest player in the U.S. camp. "To face a great opponent is really great for us. We've played a lot of different types of opponents this past year, and it's the best prep we can get heading into World Cup qualifiers."

Homecoming for Yohannes, Familiar Ground for Rodman

Saturday marks a personal milestone for Yohannes, who grew up in Springfield, Virginia, just outside Washington, before moving to the Netherlands with her family nine years ago. She attended D.C. United matches at Audi Field and played youth soccer in Northern Virginia. With family and friends in the area, Yohannes expects more than 60 guests at the opener. "I don't even know that many people!" Rodman joked. "What are we doing? That's crazy."

Audi Field is also home turf for Rodman and Washington Spirit defender Tara Rudd. Rodman is enjoying the most productive of her six NWSL seasons with 11 goals and eight assists.

Swanson Return and Sanchez Recall Bolster Attack

Star forward Mallory Swanson could make her first USWNT appearance since the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where she last played before childbirth. "She's really finding her feet, so I've been impressed with her this week" at training camp in Georgia, Hayes said. "Our goal is to get back to those levels. We're on the way to doing that."

This camp also reopened the door for North Carolina Courage winger Ashley Sanchez, Rodman's former Spirit teammate whose 20 goals have tied the NWSL single-season scoring record. The 27-year-old was last invited to the national team in early 2025 and her last match appearance came two Octobers ago. "She's been through a lot of ups and downs," Rodman said. "Being the top goal-scorer on the wing is really impressive. I'm just really happy for her, and I do think this is her time."

Injury Absences Test U.S. Depth

The U.S. task grew more difficult this week after center back Naomi Girma and defensive midfielder Sam Coffey withdrew with injuries. They join a list of previously ruled-out regulars including defender Emily Sonnett and midfielder Olivia Moultrie. The absences will force Hayes to test her defensive depth against a Spanish attack that has dismantled most opponents over the past year.

For both nations, the four-day window offers a rare chance to measure progress against the only other team with a credible claim to the world's best — a dress rehearsal for the stage both expect to occupy next summer in Brazil.
