Nationwide 3-Month Special Campaign Launched to Combat Dengue in Bangladesh

DHAKA, June 6, 2026 — The government of Bangladesh has officially launched a nationwide three-month special campaign aimed at preventing dengue outbreaks, increasing public awareness, eliminating mosquito breeding sites, and ensuring a cleaner urban environment.

The initiative was inaugurated on Saturday morning at Rabindra Sarobar in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area under the leadership of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain formally launched the program, while DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md. Abdus Salam presided over the event.

Officials stated that the campaign will run across the country with coordinated efforts from city corporations, local administrations, and health authorities. In addition to awareness drives, mobile courts will operate throughout the campaign period to enforce strict action against negligence in mosquito control.

Speaking at the event, organizers emphasized the importance of individual and household responsibility in preventing dengue. Citizens were urged to regularly clean their yards, flower pots, rooftops, balconies, drains, and surrounding areas to prevent stagnant water accumulation — the primary breeding source of Aedes mosquitoes.

Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain said that the government has already begun nationwide public awareness campaigns, including loudspeaker announcements and mass communication efforts. He stressed that cleanliness and preventing water stagnation remain the most effective ways to control dengue.

Reaffirming the government’s strict stance, the minister warned that mobile courts will be deployed if negligence continues. “Wherever Aedes mosquito larvae are found, maximum penalties will be imposed according to the law,” he said.

DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam noted that the city corporation’s recent survey identified 28 out of 75 wards as high-risk zones. He announced that a week-long “crash program” will begin from Sunday in these vulnerable areas to intensify preventive measures.

He also mentioned that the Prime Minister had earlier warned about the potential dengue risk and instructed authorities to take advance preparations, which are now being implemented jointly by city corporations and health departments.

Following the inauguration ceremony, the Health Minister and DSCC Administrator joined a colorful awareness rally with participation from the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Dhanmondi Society, and local residents to promote dengue prevention efforts across the city.
