Veteran Politician Tofail Ahmed Laid to Rest with State Honors in Bhola

Bhola, Bangladesh: Veteran politician, one of the supreme leaders of the 1969 Mass Upsurge, an organizer of the Great Liberation War, and former Industries and Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has been laid to rest with full state honors in his birthplace, Bhola. With his burial, a glorious chapter in Bangladesh's political history comes to a close.

The veteran leader breathed his last on Monday (June 1, 2026) while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka at the age of 82. He had been suffering from various age-related complications for a long time.

Moments of Final Farewell and Namaz-e-Janaza

After the first Namaz-e-Janaza was held in the capital, Dhaka, the body of Tofail Ahmed was flown by helicopter today, Tuesday (June 2), to his constituency and birthplace, Bhola.

  • Guard of Honor: The local administration in Bhola paid state tributes to the valiant freedom fighter with a formal 'Guard of Honor.'

  • Mass Outpouring of Grief: A shadow of profound grief descended upon Bhola at the news of his demise. A massive crowd of political leaders, activists, and people from all walks of life gathered at the local Eidgah and mosque premises to catch a final glimpse and participate in his funeral prayers.

  • Burial: Following the Janaza, he was laid to rest beside his parents at their family graveyard in Koralia village under South Dighaldi union of Bhola Sadar Upazila.

A Illustrious Political Career

Many turning points in the history of Bangladesh were shaped by the leadership of Tofail Ahmed. Born on October 22, 1943, he became deeply involved in politics right from his student life.

Historical Contribution: As the key leader of the historic 1969 Mass Upsurge, he bestowed the title 'Bangabandhu' upon Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on behalf of the Central Students' Action Committee. In the 1971 Liberation War, he played a crucial role as one of the main organizers and regional commanders of the 'Mujib Bahini.'

In independent Bangladesh, he was elected to the parliament eight times and served with high distinction as the Minister of Industries and Commerce during various tenures. His demise leaves an irreplaceable void in the nation's political arena.
