Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan Defends Record in Tight Senate Race Against Michele Tafoya

Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan used a televised appearance Sunday to confront the two biggest vulnerabilities of her U.S. Senate campaign — the state's sprawling fraud scandals and the surge in living costs since the Iran war began in February — while painting Republican opponent Michele Tafoya as a MAGA-aligned conservative masking moderate positions.

The race has tightened to within the margin of error in recent polling, according to CBS News, after Flanagan won the August primary by nearly 20 percentage points over U.S. Rep. Angie Craig despite trailing in pre-primary surveys. Flanagan told WCCO Sunday Morning she operates as if she is "10 points behind" and has completed more than 300 campaign events across 112 communities, with a third statewide tour of 30 stops in 30 days now underway.

Fraud Scandal Shadows Incumbent's Campaign

Flanagan has faced sustained criticism over Minnesota's fraud investigations, which have implicated multiple state programs. Gov. Tim Walz has accepted public blame for the failures, but critics argue Flanagan, as the state's second-highest official, shares responsibility.

"I am incredibly angry with the fraud as most Minnesotans are as well, but I have supported the independent Office of Inspector General and harsher penalties," Flanagan said during the Oct. 11 broadcast. She emphasized her backing for structural oversight reforms rather than accepting personal culpability for the administration's lapses.

Affordability and Iran War Drive Policy Contrast

Flanagan has centered her general-election message on kitchen-table economics, filming campaign advertisements at gas stations to highlight soaring prices for gasoline, diesel and groceries since the Iran war erupted last February. She contrasted her approach with Tafoya's earlier rhetoric on the conflict.

"It took 216 days for Michele Tafoya to say that the war in Iran was wrong," Flanagan said. "Up until that point she had been lock step with Donald Trump, and in particular when asked about the high cost of fuel and diesel prices, she said people should keep a stiff upper lip and take one less trip to Starbucks. That is not an economic plan."

Tafoya's Record Under Scrutiny

The Flanagan campaign has sought to define Tafoya — a former sportscaster — as a "MAGA conservative in sheep's clothing." They note Tafoya's stated support for abortion rights extends only to the first trimester, her initial endorsement of the Iran war, and her backing of what Flanagan called Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill," a reference to the former president's signature legislative package.

Tafoya's relationship with Trump has not been monolithic. She publicly urged him not to run in 2024, a nuance her opponents have not emphasized. Tafoya is scheduled to appear on WCCO Sunday Morning on Oct. 18 for her own extended interview.

Why This Race Matters for Senate Control

Minnesota's Senate seat is one of a handful of competitive races that will determine party control of the chamber in January. The state has not elected a Republican to the Senate since 2002, but the combination of fraud fallout, inflation anger and a high-profile Republican recruit has made the contest unexpectedly close. For the Bangladeshi-American diaspora and other immigrant communities in the Twin Cities, the outcome may signal how effectively incumbents can separate themselves from administrative failures while defending progressive economic records in a volatile national environment.
