Texas Senate Race Roiled by Infighting as Paxton Allies Allege Sabotage

The Texas Senate race has descended into open warfare among Republicans, with allies of Attorney General Ken Paxton accusing fellow party members of deliberately undermining his candidacy, according to NBC News reporting. The infighting threatens to weaken GOP unity ahead of a critical election cycle.

Bad Blood in Texas Senate Race

Paxton's campaign has weathered a barrage of damaging disclosures in recent weeks. Private conversations have been leaked to the press. Details of past romantic affairs have surfaced. Even his physical appearance has become a target of ridicule. At least some of Paxton's supporters are convinced the attacks are coordinated and originate from within the Republican establishment.

Primary Wounds Refuse to Heal

The current hostility traces back to a bruising primary contest in which Paxton defeated incumbent Senator John Cornyn. Interviews with more than a dozen Texas Republicans involved in the crossfire reveal little hope for a truce before Election Day — or perhaps ever. Many in Paxton's corner believe operatives aligned with Cornyn are working to tank his general election prospects. Other Republicans argue Paxton's own high negative ratings make him a liability few want to embrace publicly.

Allies Allege Internal Sabotage

The depth of the rupture suggests the party's ability to present a united front is in jeopardy. Some operatives warn the fissures could sideline broader GOP efforts across the state. Paxton's team has not publicly named specific individuals they believe are responsible for the leaks, but the conviction that the sabotage is internal has hardened among his core supporters.

Democratic Challenger Addresses Absence

On the Democratic side, state Representative James Talarico returned to the campaign trail this week after a period of absence. Talarico told reporters his time off was due to what he described as a "nasty case of the flu." His return allows Democrats to resume contrasting their nominee with a Republican candidate consumed by intra-party conflict.

Why It Matters for Texas Politics

The Texas Senate contest carries national implications. A seat flip would alter the balance of power in the upper chamber. The Republican civil war also offers a case study in how primary bitterness can persist into general elections, potentially depressing turnout and donor enthusiasm. For voters, the spectacle raises questions about whether either faction can govern effectively after such a public rupture.
