Apple Stock Surges as Tim Cook Era Ends — But Margin Pressures Loom

Apple stock has climbed 25% this year, making it the top performer among the Magnificent Seven mega-cap technology companies. The surge pushed Apple past a $5 trillion market capitalization for the first time earlier this week before a slight pullback, according to Business Insider.

The gains come as Apple prepares to report its fiscal third-quarter results, which mark Tim Cook's final earnings as CEO. Cook is ending his tenure on a strong note, with the company sidestepping the broader industry debate over massive artificial intelligence capital expenditure by focusing on its core consumer hardware business.

Apple Stock Leads the Mag 7 in 2026

While other Magnificent Seven companies face tough questions about what their AI spending is actually delivering, Apple has carved a different path. Its emphasis on consumer hardware rather than sweeping AI infrastructure investments has resonated with investors this year.

The company's results are scheduled for release around 4:30 p.m. ET, after the closing bell. Apple's earnings call with analysts will follow at approximately 5 p.m. ET.

Memory Costs and iPhone Price Hikes

Despite the strong stock performance, Apple faces mounting challenges on the cost side. Cook said earlier this year that Apple was raising prices to offset a supply crunch in memory hardware, a move that could weigh on demand for new devices.

The iPhone has so far been spared from Apple's recent price hikes. However, the company is widely expected to raise prices in September alongside its new device lineup as it confronts cost pressures on its famously high gross margin.

Investors will be watching the earnings call for any signals about possible iPhone price increases. They will also be looking for updates on Apple's AI plans, even though the company is not primarily a capital-expenditure story like some of its tech peers.

Analyst Warns of Downside for Apple Stock

Not everyone is convinced the rally will hold. Jefferies has set a base-case price target of $308.92 per share for Apple stock, implying roughly 10% downside over the next 12 months.

The investment bank expects Apple to have missed gross margin estimates for the last quarter and sees memory costs as a persistent problem for margins going forward.

"Although AAPL's premium iPhone roadmap and ability to raise prices would partly offset higher memory costs, margin is on the downside,"

That assessment came from Jefferies analyst Edison Lee in a July 27 client note. Apple's total current liabilities are estimated at $138.32 billion.

Why It Matters: A Transition Under Pressure

The combination of Cook's departure and rising component costs places Apple at a delicate inflection point. The company has historically commanded some of the highest gross margins in the hardware industry, and any erosion of that advantage could reshape investor expectations.

For the global Bangladeshi and South Asian diaspora — many of whom follow Apple products closely as both consumers and retail investors — the September iPhone launch will be a critical test. Price increases on flagship devices could affect demand in price-sensitive emerging markets across South Asia, where the iPhone competes aggressively with lower-cost Android alternatives.

The bigger question is whether Apple can continue to outperform its mega-cap peers without a sprawling AI infrastructure narrative. If memory costs eat into margins and iPhone price hikes dampen demand, the stock's 25% year-to-date gain may face its first real test.
