USA vs Spain Rematch Set for Philadelphia After USWNT Falls in Washington

The reigning Olympic champion U.S. women's national team dropped a 2-0 decision to Spain, the top-ranked side and defending Women's World Cup winner, on Oct. 10 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., according to US Soccer. Two clinical Spanish strikes inside the opening 15 minutes proved decisive before a sellout crowd, though the Americans outshot the visitors 13-6 overall and 10-3 on target while holding Spain without a single shot in the second half.

Early Deficit Proves Costly

Spain capitalized on its chances early, punishing defensive lapses with precision finishing. The U.S. created sustained pressure after the opening quarter, forcing multiple world-class saves from the Spanish goalkeeper, but could not convert. Spotting the world's best team a two-goal head start ultimately left the Americans with too much ground to recover despite controlling long stretches of the match.

Triple Espresso Reunited on the Field

Forwards Trinity Rodman, Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson — the self-dubbed "Triple Espresso" who combined for 10 goals and five assists en route to the 2024 Olympic gold — shared the pitch for the first time since the Paris final. Swanson entered in the 66th minute, marking her first USWNT appearance in 710 days since the post-Olympic tour on Oct. 30, 2024. She slotted in as an attacking midfielder alongside Rodman and Wilson, recreating the trio that helped define the Olympic run.

Hayes Era Debut Pipeline Continues

Head coach Emma Hayes has now overseen 41 matches since taking charge in June 2024. Her tenure began with a historic pace of player integration: 32 debuts in her first 32 games, a rate unmatched by predecessors Jill Ellis (30 debuts in 132 games) and Vlatko Andonovski (18 in 65). The U.S. is 19-0-1 in matches featuring at least one debutant under Hayes. Five uncapped players — Jordan Silkowitz, Trinity Byars, Kate Del Fava, Pietra Tordin and Evelyn Shores — are on the roster for this window, though none appeared in the opener.

Rematch Sunday in Chester, Pennsylvania

The teams meet again Oct. 13 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa. (7 p.m. ET), with another capacity crowd expected. The match airs on TNT and HBO Max in English and on Universo and Peacock in Spanish, plus radio on Westwood One Sports via Fútbol de Primera. Both sides will treat the second leg as a tactical adjustment window ahead of future tournament cycles.

Why This Rivalry Matters

Olympic champion versus World Cup champion — the only two major global titles in women's soccer — makes this pairing a benchmark for both programs. For the U.S., the loss snaps a lengthy home unbeaten streak and exposes finishing concerns against elite opposition. For Spain, the win validates their top ranking and tournament pedigree. The rematch offers immediate feedback on whether the U.S. can solve a high-press, technically superior side that punishes early mistakes, a question that will shape roster decisions heading into the next World Cup cycle.
