USWNT and Spain players ahead of their October 2026 friendly at Audi Field in Washington

The second-ranked United States hosts top-ranked Spain in two friendlies this week, a likely dress rehearsal for the semifinals or final of the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil nine months from now.

The USA vs Spain women's soccer series opens Saturday at Audi Field in Washington (2:30 p.m. ET, TBS) and concludes Tuesday at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania (7 p.m. ET, TNT) — two matches separated by 76½ hours and 120 miles, according to Yahoo Sports.

The meetings matter beyond the scorelines. They pit the reigning world champions against the defending Olympic gold medalists, offer the Americans their final serious tests before World Cup qualifying begins next month, and give both programs a rare measuring stick: the teams have not faced each other in four years and have met only four times in history, Yahoo Sports reported.

What is at stake in the October friendlies

The results will not carry official weight, especially with key players missing from both rosters. But for the U.S., the window leads directly into CONCACAF qualifying, where a single win — against No. 78 El Salvador — would secure passage to Brazil. Even a monumental upset would leave a backdoor route through the intercontinental playoff, according to Yahoo Sports.

Spain has already qualified. That has not softened its approach.

"They're two friendly games, but we're approaching them as if the World Cup starts here," Spain captain Irene Paredes said, according to Yahoo Sports. "Before, we looked at [the U.S.] from several steps below and wanted to be like them. Now we can go toe-to-toe with them."

U.S. forward Trinity Rodman struck a similar note. "It's a huge opportunity, especially with it being friendlies," she said Friday. "We've had the privilege to have great opponents this year going into a World Cup year."

The Americans have been tested already this year, winning two of three home matches against No. 5 Japan in April and splitting two away games with No. 7 Brazil in June.

Why Spain is ranked No. 1 ahead of the USA

Spain's rise has been one of the fastest in the sport. The Spaniards did not crack the FIFA top 10 until five years ago. Since then they have won the 2023 World Cup, finished second at the 2025 European Championship and held the No. 1 ranking since August 2025, Yahoo Sports reported. Their development system has produced two of the past three under-20 world titles and two U-17 trophies.

The senior side's record is just as striking. Since losing to the U.S. in the 2020 SheBelieves Cup, Spain has lost only 10 of 104 matches. Across its past 27 games, its only regulation defeats have come against European champion England.

Swanson's possible return and a reshaped USWNT attack

Mallory Swanson could make her first USWNT appearance since the 2024 Paris Olympics, her last matches before childbirth. U.S. coach Emma Hayes said the forward has impressed at training camp in Georgia.

"She's really finding her feet, so I've been impressed with her this week," Hayes said. Whether Swanson plays, and at what level after a year away, remains an open question heading into Saturday.

The camp also brought back North Carolina Courage winger Ashley Sanchez for the first time since early 2025. Her 20 goals have tied the NWSL single-season record.

"Being the top goal-scorer on the wing is really impressive," Rodman said of Sanchez. "I'm just really happy for her, and I do think this is her time."

Rodman arrives in career form herself, with 11 goals and eight assists this NWSL season. Audi Field is home ground for her and Washington Spirit defender Tara Rudd.

Injuries test U.S. depth against Spain's attack

The American task grew harder this week when center back Naomi Girma and midfielder Sam Coffey withdrew with injuries. They join defender Emily Sonnett and midfielder Olivia Moultrie on the absent list, leaving Hayes to patch a defense against one of the world's most relentless attacks.

How Hayes reshuffles that back line — and whether the results shift the FIFA rankings or World Cup expectations — will define the window.

Saturday also carries personal weight for Lily Yohannes, the 19-year-old Lyonnes midfielder who is the youngest player in camp. She grew up in Springfield, Virginia, attended D.C. United matches at Audi Field and played youth soccer in Northern Virginia before moving to the Netherlands with her family nine years ago. She expects more than 60 guests at the opener, Yahoo Sports reported.

"I don't even know that many people!" Rodman joked. "What are we doing? That's crazy."

For both nations, the four-day window is a chance to measure progress against the only other team with a credible claim to being the world's best — on the stage both expect to occupy next summer in Brazil.
