Dhaka-Chattogram, Thursday, May 14, 2026 — The funeral prayers (Janaza) for Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, a veteran Bangladeshi politician, key organizer of the Liberation War, and Presidium Member of the Bangladesh Awami League, were held today with full state honors in the capital, Dhaka, and the port city of Chattogram. Hundreds of thousands attended the prayers in both cities. The venues turned into a sea of people as political colleagues, leaders from various parties, and the general public gathered to pay their final respects.
His second Janaza was held at 11:00 AM at the Jamiatul Falah National Mosque premises in Chattogram. People from all walks of life participated in the funeral amid tight security. The mosque grounds and surrounding areas were packed to capacity with thousands of mourners. Following the prayers, a special supplication (Munajat) was offered for the salvation of the departed soul. His body was then taken to his family village in Mirsarai, Chattogram, for burial.
Attending the Janaza, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said, “Engineer Mosharraf Hossain led an incredibly colorful political life. His contribution to the development of greater Chattogram is undeniable.” Additionally, former CPB President Shah Alam, Chattogram North District Awami League General Secretary Sheikh Ataur Rahman, and former Mayor Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury paid tribute to his departed soul, recalling his immense bravery during the Great Liberation War.
Earlier in the morning, his first Janaza took place in the capital, Dhaka. Thousands gathered there as well to bid him a final farewell. High-ranking government officials and national-level political leaders paid their respects.
Engineer Mosharraf Hossain was born on January 12, 1943, and passed away on May 13, 2026. He played a pivotal role in strengthening the foundation of the Awami League in the Chattogram region by participating in the historic 1970 elections.
During the Liberation War, he served as a Sub-Sector Commander under Sector-1. After independence, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Chattogram-1 (Mirsarai) constituency multiple times and held portfolios in various important government ministries. He contributed significantly to infrastructure development and public service activities across the country for decades.
The eldest son of the deceased, Sabedur Rahman, requested prayers for his father from the nation. He emotionally stated, “Our father has left us after a long struggle. We tried our best, but the will of Almighty Allah has prevailed.”
However, his only daughter, US-based physician Dr. Samina Azam, highlighted a serious concern regarding her father's death. She alleged that her father primarily passed away due to a 'Hospital-Acquired Infection' (HAI).
In a phone interview with a reporter from the US Bangla Tribune, Dr. Samina Azam said:
“It is extremely difficult for me to bear that a man who was exercising for an hour every day just a month and a half ago, went to the hospital and became infected, leading to his death. While his physical condition was stable at the time of admission, the infection situation later became complicated.”
She explained that HAIs are infections that a patient does not have upon admission but contracts during the course of treatment. These are often spread through contaminated medical equipment, poor hygiene, or antibiotic-resistant bacteria, leading to complications like pneumonia or bloodstream infections.
Recalling her father’s memory, Dr. Samina Azam shared a vital lesson from her childhood. She recounted an incident at DC Hill where a policeman was mistreating a woman. Angered, she asked her father to call the Deputy Commissioner (DC) to have the policeman fired.
Her father then gave her a priceless lesson. Handing her the phone, he said, “If you want to say something, tell the DC in your own name. Do not use my name or identity.” Dr. Azam noted, “That day, my father taught me that one must stand on one’s own feet in life and never use someone else’s identity to exert influence.” This stands as a testament to the high moral character he possessed.
The passing of Engineer Mosharraf Hossain marks the end of a significant chapter in Bangladesh's political history. Distinguished personalities remarked that a great void has been created. The nation will forever remember his glorious contributions to independence, the Liberation War, and the development of the country with deep respect.
