May 13, 2026: Veteran Awami League leader, former Housing and Public Works Minister, and freedom fighter Engineer Mosharraf Hossain has passed away. He breathed his last on Wednesday, May 13, at 10:15 AM, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in Bangladesh’s political history and the hearts of the people of Chattogram’s Mirsharai region.
His son, Mahbub Rahman, confirmed the news in a Facebook post, writing, “My father, a beloved leader of the people of Mirsharai, former minister, and freedom fighter Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, returned to the mercy of Almighty Allah at 10:15 AM on Wednesday. Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un. We seek prayers for the forgiveness of his departed soul.”
Meanwhile, his daughter, Dr. Samina Azam, who is currently in the United States, shared an emotional tribute describing her father’s final days. According to her statement, he was first admitted to the hospital with community-acquired pneumonia, but later developed hospital-acquired pneumonia and sepsis, which worsened his condition significantly.
“This was our last selfie together, when he was feeling a little better after becoming septic from hospital-acquired pneumonia,” she wrote. “My Abba was a fighter throughout his entire life — for his country, for his beliefs, for his family’s stability, and even in the way he pushed us to become better people. Until his very last breath, he fought his illness with strength and courage.”
Dr. Samina added that the entire family was able to remain by his side during his final moments. They prayed together, recited verses from the Qur’an, and repeatedly expressed their love for him. “He looked peaceful, and he took his last breath surrounded by the people who loved him most,” she wrote. She recently came back to USA after visiting her father.
Engineer Mosharraf Hossain was widely respected as one of the senior leaders of the Awami League and played a significant role in Bangladesh’s political landscape for decades. He was especially influential in the Chattogram region and was regarded by many in Mirsharai as a leader deeply connected to ordinary people. Alongside his political career, he was also recognized for his contribution as a freedom fighter during Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
Following the news of his passing, political leaders, supporters, and well-wishers from across the country have expressed deep sorrow and offered prayers for the eternal peace of his soul.
The family has announced the following funeral prayer (Janaza) schedule:
