International Desk: In a highly competitive election held at the UN Headquarters in New York, Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has been elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This marks a historic and proud milestone in Bangladesh’s diplomatic history.

Out of the 193 member states of the General Assembly, 190 cast their votes in the election held on Tuesday (June 2, 2026). Dr. Khalilur Rahman secured his glorious victory by bagging 99 votes. His sole opponent, Cyprus's special envoy and veteran diplomat Andreas S. Kakouris, received 91 votes.

Significance and Agenda of this Historic Victory

The main contest for this seat—allotted to the Asia-Pacific region for this term—was between Bangladesh and Cyprus. Following the victory, Dr. Khalilur Rahman was congratulated by the current President of the General Assembly and Germany's former Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock. Dr. Rahman will officially assume his duties when the 81st session commences this coming September, presiding over the global assembly for a one-year term.

As the President of the UN's highest policy-making forum, Dr. Khalilur Rahman highlighted several key priorities in his 'Vision Statement':

  • Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution: Halting ongoing wars and conflicts worldwide and seeking political solutions through dialogue.

  • Voice of the Global South: Championing the rights of developing nations, tackling climate change risks, and working toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • Women in Peacekeeping: Expanding the participation of women in UN peacekeeping operations and ensuring gender equality.

Historic Record: This marks only the second time in Bangladesh's history that a Bangladeshi leader has ascended to this top position on the world stage. Previously, in 1986, Bangladesh’s then-Foreign Minister Humayun Rashid Choudhury served as the President of the 41st UNGA session.

International Reaction and Bangladesh's Position

In his immediate reaction after winning the election, Dr. Khalilur Rahman stated, "Amidst widespread crises and conflicts across the globe, the public's trust and faith in the United Nations face a severe challenge today. I will work alongside all member states to rebuild this trust and foster an effective, inclusive multilateral system."
