The latest midterms 2026 polls show Democrats leading Republicans by 8.2 percentage points nationally five days before the November 3 vote. Several Senate races remain close, Al Jazeera reported.
The gap points to different outcomes in the two chambers. Analysts quoted by Al Jazeera described a Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives as within reach. A Senate majority depends on winning a handful of tight races, including in states Democrats have not carried in decades.
The stakes are concrete. Control of even one chamber would give Democrats tools to block parts of President Donald Trump's agenda and to investigate his administration.
Who is leading the 2026 midterm polls?
Democrats lead Republicans 51.4 percent to 43.2 percent in RealClearPolling's national polling average, according to Al Jazeera.
That national lead does not hold in every Senate contest. Al Jazeera reported that the margin narrows sharply in several states that will decide the chamber.
Both parties sent prominent figures onto the campaign trail in the final week. Trump, former President Barack Obama and Vice President JD Vance campaigned on Wednesday in Ohio, Georgia and North Carolina, Al Jazeera reported.
Texas Senate race: Talarico and Paxton within two points
In Texas, Democrat James Talarico leads Republican Ken Paxton 48.5 percent to 46.7 percent, according to RealClearPolling figures cited by Al Jazeera. Democrats have not won a Senate election in Texas since 1988.
In Michigan, two polling measures differ. A Mitchell Research poll for CBS Detroit, conducted October 26-27, found Democrat Abdul El-Sayed leading Republican Mike Rogers 51 percent to 44 percent. Al Jazeera reported that the seven-point lead was up from a 4.2-point advantage earlier this month.
RealClearPolling shows a narrower Michigan race, with El-Sayed at 48 percent and Rogers at 46 percent.
Democratic Congressman Maxwell Frost of Florida traveled to Michigan to campaign for El-Sayed. He said face-to-face conversations with voters mattered most.
"Everyone's seen the negative bigoted ads and Islamophobic ads, but what hasn't happened is everyone hasn't had person-to-person conversation about why Abdul is the right senator for Michigan," Frost said.
Both parties are courting young voters in the state. Will Lawrence, a Democrat seeking to win Michigan's 7th Congressional District from Republicans, told Al Jazeera that "young people are a huge part of the coalition and could really be the difference-maker on November 3rd."
A Republican supporter told Al Jazeera that a movement among Gen Z voters was turning more conservative.
How many seats do Democrats need in the House and Senate?
Republicans hold majorities in both chambers of Congress. According to Al Jazeera, Democrats need:
- A net gain of three seats to win the House of Representatives.
- A net gain of four seats to win the Senate, reaching the 51 seats needed for control.
Republicans hold 53 of the 100 Senate seats. Democrats hold 47, a figure that includes two independents who caucus with them.
"Even the most optimistic of Republicans will tell you that it's going to be pretty tough for the GOP to hold on to the House of Representatives," Al Jazeera correspondent Scott McLean said. He added that the Senate was a "different story."
McLean said that even if Democrats win North Carolina and Ohio and hold their current seats, they would still be two seats short of 51. Al Jazeera reported that Alaska and Texas could help close that gap. Republicans are also hoping to win Michigan.
Why the midterms are important: what a Democratic House could do
A Democratic House alone would change how Trump governs for the rest of his term. Al Jazeera reported that a Democratic majority could block parts of his legislative agenda and open investigations into his administration.
House Democrats could also call administration officials to testify before congressional committees. The White House could challenge those demands, the outlet reported.
Democratic strategist Joel Rubin described the vote as a potential "protest election."
"I think that overwhelmingly American voters who will vote Democratic are voting because they want to put a check on President Trump's power," Rubin said.
Republican strategist Suhail Khan said Trump was losing support among some of his own voters, who are frustrated by rising fuel prices, rents and mortgage costs, according to Al Jazeera.
Frustration extends beyond one party. Some voters in Lexington, Kentucky, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, told Al Jazeera they were unhappy with both parties. One self-described independent who votes for both sides said they felt frustrated and without hope.
What is still unknown before November 3
It is not yet clear whether the Democrats' national lead will turn into seat gains. Polls measure voter intent, and the Michigan figures show that separate surveys of the same race can differ by several points.
The Senate outcome is likely to depend on close contests in Texas, Michigan, Alaska, North Carolina and Ohio. If Democrats take the House, a further question is whether the White House would resist demands for officials to testify.
Voting takes place on Tuesday, November 3.
