Prof. Shafi Bhuiyan, PhD

Professor Dr. Shafi Bhuiyan is an internationally acclaimed public health expert, educator, and researcher. Based at the University of Toronto, he specializes in Clinical Public Health and Global Health, where he co-founded programs designed to integrate Internationally Educated Health Professionals (IEHPs) into the Canadian healthcare system. His leadership has seen a 96% success rate in employment or higher education for over 600 trained professionals. Key Professional Roles • University of Toronto: Faculty Member and Academic Lead for MScCH and CPH Certificate programs. • All Saints University School of Medicine: Founding Dean of the Postgraduate School and MPH Program Director. • Global Leadership: Former Board Chair of the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research and Founding Board Member of the Canadian Association for Global Health. Dr. Bhuiyan is a pioneer of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook, a program now implemented in approximately 42 countries. He also played a vital role in modernizing the Azimpur Matrisadan in Bangladesh. His research, spanning over 20 years across Japan, Thailand, the USA, and Canada, focuses on health workforce development and community-based research. Mr. Bhuiyan is a physician by training, and holds two Master’s degrees, a PhD, and postdoctoral credentials from institutions in four different countries. His humanitarian and academic contributions have earned him numerous honors, including, RBC Top 75 Canadian Immigrants award, Lions Clubs International President’s Distinguished Leadership Award, and Helen Keller & Melvin Jones Fellowships.
