Dhaka, May 21:
Members of the Health Sector Reform Commission, led by Professor Dr. A.K. Azad Khan, met with Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain today and held detailed discussions regarding the implementation of the commission’s recommendations. The meeting took place at the conference room of the Ministry of Health at the Secretariat.
Commission members stated that they remain committed to providing full support in the future to ensure the improvement, accountability, security, and people-oriented healthcare services in the country.
During the discussion, it was noted that the report prepared by the Health Sector Reform Commission reflects the opinions and recommendations of various political parties, experts, physicians, public health specialists, administrative officials, researchers, healthcare workers, and other professionals concerned with the sector.
The commission members particularly emphasized strengthening Primary Health Care and called for increased budget allocation for the health sector to ensure effective implementation. They stated that building a strong primary healthcare system would significantly reduce disease burden, medical expenses, and excessive pressure on tertiary-level hospitals.
Various recommendations related to health sector reform, digital healthcare systems, accountability, doctors’ security, and improvement of healthcare service quality were also discussed.
Expressing optimism, the Health Minister said that the government would gradually take initiatives to implement these important recommendations.
Among those present were Professor Dr. A.K. Azad Khan, head of the Health Sector Reform Commission; Professor Dr. Syed Akram Hossain, member of the commission and Chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology at Bangladesh Medical University; Dr. Mohammad Zakir Hossain; Professor Dr. Liaquat Ali; M.M. Reza; Dr. Azharul Islam; and other commission members.
It is noteworthy that the Health Sector Reform Commission was formed during the tenure of the interim government, and the commission later submitted its recommendations to the government.
