From bridges, roads, and power plants to urban infrastructure and technology-driven development, engineers have played a vital role in every pillar of the nation’s progress. In recognition of their contributions and professional leadership, the 78th founding anniversary of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), celebrated as “Engineers Day,” is being observed on Thursday. Distinguished figures from the government, engineering profession, and other professional sectors participated in the daylong event held at the IEB headquarters in Ramna, Dhaka.

Organized under the theme “Advanced Technology, Developed Nation,” the event highlighted the important role of engineers in national development and in building a future technology-driven state.

From Thursday afternoon, engineers, students, teachers, and guests from different levels began gathering at the IEB premises. The entire area came alive with colorful decorations, lighting, and banners, creating a festive atmosphere where young and senior engineers came together.

Speakers at the event said that engineers have played a significant role in the country’s infrastructural development, industrialization, urbanization, and technological advancement since independence. In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, they emphasized the need to produce more skilled engineers capable of addressing challenges related to artificial intelligence, smart technologies, and sustainable development.

RAJUK Chairman Engineer Mohammad Riazul Islam Riju said that technology- and innovation-based planning is essential for ensuring sustainable national development. He urged young engineers to focus on research, skill development, and achieving internationally competitive technological expertise.

At the event, Dr. Abu Jafar Md. Zahid Hossain, the minister in charge of the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, said that the innovative potential of both senior and young engineers must be utilized more effectively in shaping the Bangladesh of the future. He also remarked that engineers now bear greater responsibility not only for technology-driven development but also for building a humane and inclusive society.

IEB leaders noted that the organization, established on May 7, 1948, has been leading efforts for the professional rights of engineers, technological excellence, and national development for more than seven decades. They added that greater emphasis is now being placed on research, innovation, and developing skilled human resources to make the country’s engineering sector internationally competitive.

Discussions at the event also focused on engineering education, technological innovation, infrastructure development, and climate-resilient development planning. Many young engineers participating in the program said they want to become more actively involved in the country’s development journey through research and new technologies.

The daylong celebration also included discussion sessions, cultural programs, and award presentations. By evening, the entire IEB premises had turned into a grand gathering place for engineers.
